16 May 2024 – The Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU), with the support of the American Bar Association (ABA), drafted and delivered a statement at the 79th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Commission). Done within the context of the shrinking civic space, PALU’s statement highlighted the challenges to judicial independence in Africa, specifically drawing attention to systemic reprisals against lawyers and Bar associations in the East African region. It also included recommendations to the African Commission and the focal point for judicial independence in Africa. This statement was part of PALU’s ongoing advocacy efforts to address reprisals against the legal profession in Africa.
